The day is set apart with the suffering of brave children of Bangladesh for laying out Bangla as the state language of the then East Pakistan (present Bangladesh ). This is one and only penance of lives for the Mother Language throughout the entire existence of humankind.

There are two separate regions of Pakistan divided on religious lines - one of which is West Bengal's neighboring East Pakistan.

However, while Urdu is the main language in West Pakistan, Bengali is the main language in East Pakistan. The ruling Pakistani government is Urdu-speaking, so it has been angry with East Pakistan since the beginning. Bengali should be given the status of the state language - this demand started the language movement on the soil of East Pakistan. On this day in 1952, many young people including Rafiq, Salam, Abdul Jabbar, Shafiul, Salam, Barkat were martyred when the barbaric police fired on the protesting students and social workers. This day is also known as Language Martyr Day.
